The circular economy starts with good practices. That goes from waste management to innovation to consumption. All in a system in which companies, associations and institutions participate. Outlining this scenario, which between the agrifood, construction and textile sectors brings together 253 (245 realised in Italia) good practices for the circular economy, is the database of the Italian platform for the circular economy Icesp.

The route

A challenge for a path that marks an evolution in which companies and institutions play an important role. This path was illustrated during the 8th Icesp Annual Conference, attended by Enea, as well as representatives of Cetma and the Icesp Platform, Mimit, Mase, Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale, Erion, Rion, Conai, Kyoto Club, Fondazione Ecosistemi, Fondazione articolo 49, Symbola and Fondazione Sviluppo Sostenibile.

"ENEA plays a leading role in the development of the Icesp platform, the national hub of the European Platform for the Circular Economy, with an active presence in all its thematic areas and in the main national and European institutional tables on circular economy, ecodesign, and critical raw materials, as well as in forums and strategic initiatives in support of sustainability policies," commented ENEA president Francesca Mariotti. The numbers of participants and the quality of the results achieved testify to the solidity of the path undertaken and confirm that we are at the forefront in the dissemination of circular economy models and solutions, also thanks to initiatives such as the Italian Phosphorus Platform and an intense technology transfer activity, particularly towards SMEs'.

Good Practice Report

The report releases an up-to-date snapshot of all the good practices contributing to the transition to the circular economy and covering the agrifood, textile and construction sectors, with a prevalence of interventions in the production phases with 66 good practices mapped and waste management with 60, "where circular strategies can generate the greatest benefits in terms of resource efficiency and reduced environmental impacts". In this scenario, the supply of secondary raw materials, innovation and consumption are also of significant importance. At territorial level, Lombardy, Lazio and Emilia-Romagna are particularly active.

"The report," adds the president of Cetma and the Icesp Platform, Roberto Morabito, "analyses the distribution of practices by economic sector, product lifecycle phase, type of organisation and geographical area, offering a snapshot of the dynamics at work in the circular transition in Italia. At the same time it makes it possible to identify replicable models and represents a useful tool to strengthen the dialogue between institutions, businesses, research and civil society'.
